Thedro Exhibition
Thedro (Δέντρο), derived from the Greek word for “tree,” is an exhibition hosted by @_studioii that examines the family tree as a metaphorical and literal structure. Since antiquity, trees have embodied a multitude of meanings: at times, they have been a symbol of life, growth, immortality, and stability. With their roots planted deep into the ground and their branches reaching up into the sky, they have been seen as a force of nature capable of supporting the world and connecting it with the heavens. In Ancient Greece, trees were said to be inhabited by nymphs, such as the Dryads or the Daphnaie. Damaging or cutting down a tree meant the death of its nymph, and could therefore be harshly punished by the gods.
But trees are also a metaphor for one’s roots, slowly growing and evolving upwards yet firmly planted in a shared origin and lineage which dates back to centuries ago. Just like “real” roots, they represent the foundation of our own identity, our ancestry, our history. Every human being stems from a tree and is, at the same time, a branch of its own.
By looking at a tree, we look at ourselves, at who we are, and at how we came to be. Yet there are many ways to see, and there are infinite ways to tell a story: the story of our past memories and of our present shaped by them. Just as our ancestors connected myth to reality, we now have the opportunity to do the same using our own language, our own experiences, and our own ways.
No tree looks the same as another, no story is written twice the same way.
