Julia Oram (b. 1990, Canada) is a Canadian artist of Greek and English heritage based in Berlin. Working primarily through sculpture, her practice explores the relationship between material, form, and the enduring structures of the natural world. Through marble, alabaster, glass, ceramic, and mixed mediums, Oram creates reductive forms that investigate themes of transformation, temporality, and permanence. Her work seeks a point of convergence between abstraction and archetype, drawing on the formal clarity of Archaic Greek sculpture while engaging broader questions of human connection to landscape, memory, and material culture.
At the core of her practice is a commitment to material inquiry. Through processes of carving, casting, assembling, and refinement, Oram allows the inherent qualities of each material to guide the development of form. Her sculptures occupy a space between modernism and antiquity, where simplicity becomes a means of distillation rather than reduction. By stripping away excess, she seeks forms that communicate through presence, balance, and spatial resonance, inviting contemplation of the essential relationships between body, object, and environment.
Alongside sculpture, Oram maintains an interdisciplinary practice that includes chemical painting, drawing, ink, oil painting, and digital rendering. Experimental and process-driven, these works often incorporate reactive and unconventional materials, including minerals, honey, sunscreen lotion, and other organic substances. Through these investigations, she explores cycles of growth, erosion, preservation, and decay, challenging fixed distinctions between natural processes and artistic intervention.
Across all media, Oram's work is guided by an interest in transformation, both material and perceptual. Her practice examines how matter records time and how abstraction can serve as a conduit for shared human experience, creating spaces where permanence and impermanence coexist.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in Germany, Greece, Japan, South Korea, and Canada, including the solo exhibition Impermanence (2024) in Fujiyoshida, Japan, and Nature (2025) at the CICA Museum.
